The VITA Program (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) offers free tax help to people who make $51,000 or less and need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. In 2005, HCDC became an IRS certified VITA Site, and quickly emerged as the community's primary VITA tax agency. HCDC continues to serve as a lead agency for the Greater Athens Economic Development Tax Coalition.

What To Bring?

  • Copy of last year’s tax return

  • Taxpayer’s Proof of Identity

  • All forms, W-2, 1098 and 1099

  • Information for other income

  • Identification number for Child Care Provider

  • Information for deductions/credits

  • Proof of account for direct deposit of refund (e.g. voided check)

  • Social Security cards and/ or ITIN notices/ cards for you, your spouse, and dependents

In partnership with the University of Georgia and other community agencies, we provide the community with a comprehensive tax program. In 2011 alone, we assisted in preparing 197 statements and returning $311,074 back to the community.
